METALcoat
– An environmentally friendly and safe coating to replace hard chrome
March 2020 – March 2022
Purpose and goals
The goal of this project is to develop a safe and environmentally friendly coating process to replace hard chrome, providing good protection against corrosion and mechanical wear of surfaces on molding tools, components, and machine parts. We aim to use the Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) coating technology, which is much more environmentally friendly than the current electroplating process used for hard chrome coatings, and which releases chemicals that are hazardous to personnel and the environment, including the carcinogenic chromium VI.
Expected effects and results
We aim to replace the current harmful electroplating process with a safer and more environmentally friendly coating process. Our expectation is to produce a functional coating that performs at least as well as hard chrome.
The project is a collaboration between CemeCon Scandinavia A/S, Department of Materials and Production på Aalborg Universitet, Gebr. Potthast GmbH & Co. KG, and Husqvarna AB.
This project has received support from the European Commission (Horizon 2020) and EUREKA with co-financing from the Innovation Fund, Vinnova, and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) under the Eurostars program (project no. E!114086).
